Which device is the IQOS ILUMA i PRIME exactly?

It is the top model of the ILUMA i range, which Philip Morris International announced for Japan on 13 March 2024 together with the standard ILUMA i and the one-piece ILUMA i ONE. Like every ILUMA device it heats TEREA sticks by induction with no blade, but it was the first generation to add a touch screen. Other markets followed Japan later.

The launch coincided with ten years since IQOS was first test-marketed in Nagoya in 2014, according to industry reporting of PMI's statement.

The family overview is in the devices section; the standard model is explained on IQOS ILUMA i explained.

Is ILUMA i PRIME the same as ILUMA PRIME without the i?

No. Both carry the PRIME name and both are flagships, but they belong to different generations three years apart. ILUMA PRIME launched in 2021 and has no screen. ILUMA i PRIME launched in 2024 with a touch screen, Pause Mode and FlexPuff. The single letter i is the only clue in the name, which is why the two are confused so often.

When an English page talks about ILUMA PRIME with no i, it means the first-generation flagship, not the device described here. That model has its own page: IQOS ILUMA PRIME explained.

What can only the ILUMA i PRIME generation do?

Three things the 2021 flagship cannot. The touch screen shows status and takes commands. Pause Mode, started by swiping the screen early in a session, lets the user stop and resume the same stick. FlexPuff adapts the session to the user's puffing rhythm automatically. These features are shared with the standard ILUMA i, not exclusive to PRIME.

IQOS's news page on Pause Mode says it can only be activated early in a session and only with Performance Mode on, and that FlexPuff does not work in a session where Pause Mode was used.

A user therefore picks one of the two per stick.

How does the i PRIME design differ from the standard ILUMA i?

The difference is materials and finish, not function. As the top model of the second generation, ILUMA i PRIME uses different body materials and colour options, while the standard ILUMA i keeps a plainer look. Both have the touch screen and the same core features, so the choice between them is about appearance rather than what the device can do.

This mirrors the first generation, where ILUMA PRIME and ILUMA differed in body and finish. The second generation simply gave the screen to both models at once instead of reserving it for the flagship.

Which sticks does ILUMA i PRIME accept?

Only TEREA and the other sticks made for ILUMA. The device uses the same SMARTCORE induction system as every ILUMA and ILUMA i model, so HEETS sticks from the blade-based ORIGINALS family do not work in it. Stick compatibility is the one thing that never changes across the six ILUMA models; what changes is design and extra features.

Why the two stick types cannot be swapped is explained on HEETS vs TEREA, and the full stick list is on IQOS stick types.

How do you use ILUMA i PRIME for the first time?

The basic sequence matches every ILUMA i device: insert a TEREA stick down to the printed line, wait for Autostart to begin heating, and use the device once the light is steady. What is specific to this model is reading status on the screen instead of counting light flashes, and opening Pause Mode with a swipe if needed.

Because the heating system is unchanged, the stick insertion and the main signals are the same as on the standard model. New users mostly need to learn the icons for battery and remaining uses.

The full sequence is on how to use IQOS ILUMA.

Who should read the ILUMA PRIME page instead of this one?

Anyone whose device says PRIME but has no touch screen. That is the 2021 model, and its own page covers it. Readers who want every model side by side should use the comparison page instead. The devices section keeps one page per model so that a search for one name does not land on facts about another.

Is ILUMA i PRIME allowed in Thailand?

No. Official travel advice from the UK government says possessing or using a heat-not-burn device in Thailand is illegal, with no exception for tourists or personal use. The 2024 flagship is treated like every other IQOS model, whichever country it came from and however it was obtained.

The legal position for visitors is set out on IQOS in Thailand and, for the sticks, TEREA in Thailand.
