What does drawing on a TEREA stick actually involve?

It means inhaling the aerosol produced when the tobacco inside the stick is heated, through the mouthpiece at the end. It is not inhaling smoke from combustion, as with a cigarette. The aerosol also changes in strength over the heating cycle, unlike the fairly even smoke of a cigarette that keeps burning.

Because nothing burns continuously, the way you draw affects each puff more than it would with a cigarette.

A cooling section near the mouth end also makes the aerosol feel milder in temperature, so former cigarette users often need a short adjustment period. The parts are described on what is TEREA.

Which puff rhythm suits a TEREA stick best?

The suggested rhythm is a light, longer and steady draw rather than short, strong and frequent ones. Heat from the metal core needs time to reach the tobacco around it, so a gentle puff lets the aerosol form fully before it reaches your mouth. Pulling too hard can give a thinner puff than expected.

Everyone settles on a slightly different rhythm. Adjusting the strength of your draw over the first few puffs of a new stick helps you find it faster.

People used to quick, hard cigarette puffs often find that longer draws give noticeably more aerosol without needing more puffs. Device basics are on the ILUMA how-to guide.

What stages does one TEREA session pass through?

A session can roughly be split into three stages. At the start the aerosol tends to be light and the aroma not yet full, because the core has only just begun to warm. In the middle it is usually at its richest and most even. Towards the end it fades gradually until the device signals the cycle is over.

How long each stage lasts varies with the device model and with each person's puffing style.

We do not give fixed timings for the stages, because they depend on several factors that should be checked in the official manual for your model. Model differences are summarised on the devices page.

Why does pulling too hard change the taste?

A strong draw pulls air through the ventilation holes faster than the metal core can heat the tobacco. The aerosol can then be more diluted than usual, and some puffs taste weaker as a result. A softer draw gives the heat time to spread properly first, which is why it tends to give a more consistent result.

This is simply the physics of heat transfer inside the stick. It is not a sign that the device or the stick is faulty.

If you notice the taste fading when you draw hard, try easing off to compare. Flavour differences between variants are covered separately on TEREA flavours explained.

How can you tell a TEREA stick has reached the end of its cycle?

The ILUMA device gives a light or vibration signal when the heating cycle for the stick is ending. Check what that signal looks like in the manual for your model. The number of puffs per stick is not one fixed figure for every model; it depends on the device and on how each person draws.

Once the signal comes, remove the stick and dispose of it properly. Forcing it further does little, because the heat from the core drops away.

Puffs taken after the signal are usually so thin they feel like drawing plain air. Model specifics are on ILUMA i and ILUMA ONE.

What should you avoid during a session?

Avoid drawing before you hear or see the signal that the device is fully ready, because aerosol produced while the core is still warming can taste uneven. Hold the stick steady too, and do not twist or pull it hard during use, so that the mechanism inside the heating chamber is not damaged.

These points are about getting a consistent result. They are not specialist safety instructions.

If you have questions about how your device works, the official manual for your model is the right reference. The step-by-step start-up sequence is on using IQOS ILUMA.

Pulling on the stick at an angle can also strain the chamber.

Can you pause partway through a TEREA session?

You can take short pauses during a session. Most devices keep the heat going for a brief period before the cycle ends, following the signals that each device sets. The exact behaviour differs between models, so the official manual for the model you use is the reliable source for precise details.

A stick that has been stopped halfway is not designed to be saved and restarted later as a fresh session.

Model features that change how a session runs are compared on the ILUMA i page, which describes the newer generation in detail.

Resuming after a long gap will not bring back the full taste of the middle stage.

Does knowing the technique matter for readers in Thailand?

Not in a legal sense. Official travel advice states that possessing or using heat-not-burn devices in Thailand is illegal, and the sticks sit in the same product category. This page is general information about how the product works for readers in countries where it is legal, not guidance for use in Thailand.

The legal position for sticks specifically is explained on TEREA in Thailand.

Travellers passing through the region should also read bringing IQOS into Thailand, since arrival checks apply to devices and sticks alike.

This page describes technique only; it is not an invitation to use the product anywhere it is prohibited.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I puff too hard on TEREA?
Air moves faster than the core can heat the tobacco, so the aerosol can be thinner and less flavourful.
Can I take a break during a TEREA session?
Short breaks are fine; most devices hold heat briefly before the cycle ends. Check your model's manual.
How many puffs does one TEREA stick give?
There is no single figure for every model. Rely on the device's end-of-cycle signal rather than counting.
Why does the first puff feel light?
The metal core has only just started to warm, so the aerosol builds up over the first stage.
Should I keep puffing after the end signal?
No. The heat drops away, and later puffs are usually too thin to be worthwhile.
Is a hard puff a sign of a faulty stick?
No. A weaker taste from hard puffs comes from heat transfer physics, not from a defect.
