What type of device is IQOS in technical terms?
IQOS is a heated tobacco product. It combines a battery, a temperature control circuit and a heating mechanism that works with real tobacco sticks, which contain tobacco leaf that has been cut and dried. What separates it from a typical e-cigarette is that it heats the tobacco itself, rather than a liquid that contains no tobacco leaf.
The part you hold during use is called the holder. Some models also have a separate pocket charger that recharges the holder through the day.
Individual models and generations are listed in the IQOS devices section.
Knowing which part does what makes the charging and cleaning guides much easier to follow later on.

Why does the WHO place heated tobacco apart from e-cigarettes?
The World Health Organization groups heated tobacco products separately from e-cigarettes because the mechanism and the material being heated are different. Both categories run on batteries and both produce an aerosol that the user inhales, but only heated tobacco products work directly on tobacco leaf. That difference in raw material is the basis for the separate category.
Classification has practical consequences too. Official travel advice for Thailand describes possessing heat-not-burn devices as illegal, as explained on is IQOS legal in Thailand.
A broader look at the category is on heat-not-burn explained.
The WHO page listed in the sources gives the organisation's own wording on this point.

How does heating tobacco differ mechanically from burning it?
A cigarette is lit at the tip and burns, producing smoke from combustion. IQOS instead uses electrical heating to raise the temperature of the tobacco without a flame, without combustion and without the ash that burning leaves behind. The heat turns volatile compounds and nicotine in the leaf into an aerosol, which the user inhales in place of combustion smoke.
The visible result can look more like vapour than smoke, because nothing is actually on fire.
How a session runs in practice, from insertion to the end signal, is covered in the step-by-step usage guide.
Because there is no combustion, there is also no lighter or match involved at any point in a session.

What keeps the heating temperature under control inside an IQOS holder?
An electronic circuit inside the holder controls the temperature throughout use. That is why the device depends on its battery for the whole session. A cigarette is different: it needs a lighter or match only once, and after that it keeps burning on its own. With IQOS, the battery and the circuit do the work from start to finish.
Because power matters so much, looking after the battery has its own guide: charging IQOS and reading the lights.
If the device stops heating unexpectedly, the not-charging checklist is the logical next stop.
In short, the battery is not just for switching on; it supplies the heat for the entire session.

What separates the IQOS blade family from the ILUMA family?
The blade family uses a technology called HEATCONTROL, with a metal blade fixed inside the holder that pushes into the middle of a stick whose tobacco is visible from outside. The ILUMA family uses the SmartCore Induction System, which heats a metal element sealed completely inside each TEREA stick. There is no blade in an ILUMA holder at all.
With no blade touching the stick, ILUMA avoids broken blades and tobacco residue stuck on a blade, as described in the IQOS cleaning guide.
Both families still heat rather than burn; they only differ in where the heater sits, which decides which sticks each device accepts.

Why do some IQOS models come as a holder plus a separate pocket charger?
Splitting the device in two keeps the holder small and light enough to handle comfortably during use, while the pocket charger carries reserve power to recharge the holder several times a day without being plugged in all the time. The two pieces are designed to be carried together. Some ILUMA models skip the pocket charger and put the battery in a single unit.
One-piece models are charged by plugging the cable straight into the device. Compare the formats on ILUMA ONE and ILUMA PRIME.
Charging routines for both layouts are explained on the charging page.
Holders in two-piece models never take a cable themselves; they only charge while seated in the pocket charger.

What is actually inside an IQOS tobacco stick?
Every stick used with IQOS contains real tobacco leaf that has been cut and dried, not the synthetic liquid used in typical e-cigarettes. Sticks for the ILUMA family, such as TEREA, have a metal element embedded inside and are sealed at both ends. Sticks for the blade family have no metal element; instead they leave a hollow channel in the centre for the blade.
This difference in construction is why sticks from one family cannot be used in the other family's holder: each heater is built around a particular position of the heat-conducting material.
More on the ILUMA stick is in what TEREA is.
Using the wrong stick can damage a device, the manufacturer warns.

How does an IQOS device compare with a vape mechanically?
A typical vape heats a liquid, usually without tobacco leaf as a main ingredient, using a heating coil in contact with that liquid. IQOS heats real tobacco directly, through a blade or a metal element depending on the family. Because of this, many countries treat the two types separately both in law and in academic classification.
The WHO notes that heated tobacco products contain tobacco directly, while most e-cigarettes do not start from tobacco leaf at all; that raw material drives the different heating designs.
How IQOS sits next to other heated tobacco brands is covered in IQOS vs glo and Ploom.
