What is the main difference between HEETS and TEREA?
How the heat reaches the tobacco. In blade devices, a heating blade inside the holder pushes into the HEETS stick and warms it from within. TEREA sticks contain their own sealed metal element, and ILUMA devices heat that element by induction, so nothing from the device enters the stick.
IQOS UK explains the two systems in its comparison article, listed in the sources.
In practice this means the device and the stick are designed as a pair. Choosing the wrong pairing is not a matter of preference but of compatibility, which is why the manufacturer states it so plainly.

Which devices use HEETS?
Blade devices such as IQOS 3 DUO and the IQOS ORIGINALS range use HEETS. IQOS 3 DUO was launched by Philip Morris International in September 2019, and in some markets it was later sold under the ORIGINALS DUO name. These devices use the HeatControl blade system.
Blade devices need their blade cleaned regularly because tobacco residue builds up on it.
Blade devices were the main IQOS design from the brand's launch until ILUMA arrived in 2021.
IQOS 3 DUO and the ORIGINALS models look similar to ILUMA at a glance, so the blade inside the chamber is the clearest way to tell them apart.

Which devices use TEREA?
Every ILUMA model: ILUMA PRIME, ILUMA and ILUMA ONE, launched in Japan in August 2021, and ILUMA i PRIME, ILUMA i and ILUMA i ONE, launched in Japan in March 2024. All six use SMARTCORE sticks such as TEREA and none has a blade.
Model details are on the devices section.
The same stick fits every ILUMA model, from the one-piece ONE devices to the PRIME versions.

Can I use TEREA in a blade device?
No. IQOS support pages say TEREA should not be used with blade devices because it may damage the device. The metal element inside a TEREA stick is not designed to meet a heating blade, so forcing one into an older holder risks both the stick and the device.
The same warning appears in the TEREA FAQ published by IQOS, listed in the sources.
The warning appears in more than one official source, which is why we treat it as settled.
A damaged holder is not covered by a simple reset, so the safest reading of the warning is to keep the two systems completely separate.

Can I use HEETS in an ILUMA device?
No. ILUMA devices are designed only for SMARTCORE sticks such as TEREA. A HEETS stick has no metal element for the induction system to heat, so the device cannot warm it as intended. IQOS describes the ILUMA range as working with its own dedicated sticks.
If you are unsure which device you have, the model name is printed on the device and on its box; the devices section lists them.
The reverse case is also covered by official support pages: ILUMA simply is not designed around a stick without its own element.

Do ILUMA devices need cleaning like blade devices?
Much less. Because ILUMA heats the stick from its own element, there is no blade to collect residue, and IQOS guidance says no internal cleaning is needed. Keeping the USB port and the charging contacts clean is still recommended. Residue build-up is a blade issue.
Charging and care are covered in how to use IQOS ILUMA.
Blade devices need their blade cleaned regularly; ILUMA users only need to keep the ports clean.

Are HEETS and TEREA flavours the same?
Not necessarily. Each stick family has its own line-up in each market, and a name used for HEETS in one country may not exist for TEREA. Compare the manufacturer's description in that market rather than assuming a name carries across.
How to read TEREA names is covered in TEREA flavours explained.
Some markets use the same colour word on both HEETS and TEREA packs, which adds to the confusion.
When a name appears in both families, check the family printed on the pack before assuming the stick suits a particular device.

Does the difference matter in Thailand?
Not legally. Both HEETS and TEREA are heated tobacco sticks, and official travel advice says heat-not-burn devices are illegal to possess or use in Thailand. The stick type does not create an exception for either device family. Official advice treats both the same.
These devices and sticks are illegal to possess or use in Thailand, according to official travel advice. See IQOS in Thailand.
Readers outside Thailand should follow the rules of their own country.
